Every therapeutic cure, and still more, any awkward attempt to show the patient the truth, tears him from the cradle of his freedom from responsibility and must therefore reckon with the most vehement resistance.

Truth costs us the comfort of blame

There's something uncomfortable in this idea that grows clearer the longer you sit with it. When someone tells you the honest thing about yourself—that your anxiety might be partly about avoiding risk, that you're using busyness to dodge loneliness, that you've been blaming circumstances instead of making choices—it doesn't feel like help. It feels like a trap closing. Because admitting the truth means admitting you actually have power in the situation, which means you're suddenly responsible for changing it.

This is why people can sit in therapy for years and resist the obvious insights their therapist gently offers. It's not stupidity or stubbornness, exactly. It's that accepting responsibility is terrifying in a way that comfortable denial isn't. There's a strange freedom in believing you're a victim of circumstance. The moment you accept that you've been choosing your patterns, you can't unknow that anymore. You have to live differently, or live with the guilt of not trying.

The non-obvious part? Adler's suggesting that resistance isn't a bug in healing—it's the signal that real growth is happening. If someone gets defensive when you point something out, they're actually on the edge of genuine change. The discomfort is where the work begins.
