Courage starts with faith, not fearlessness

Courage isn't the absence of fear—it's something closer to faith that things might actually work out. When you act despite uncertainty, you're essentially betting on yourself or on life in a way that requires genuine belief. Cicero saw this clearly: the people who move forward when everything feels risky aren't reckless or fearless. They're people who trust their own judgment, trust the process, or trust that failure won't destroy them.

This matters now because we often wait for certainty before acting. We want to feel confident before starting the conversation, changing careers, or admitting we were wrong. But confidence doesn't usually come first—faith does. The person who applies for the job they're not quite qualified for, or tells someone the truth they've been avoiding, is making a small bet that the world is fundamentally workable. That's not blind optimism. It's a specific kind of faith: belief that you can handle whatever comes next.

The interesting part is how this works in reverse too. When you act as if you believe in yourself, your actual faith grows. Courage and belief aren't separate things waiting to align perfectly. They're partners that strengthen each other with every small risk you take.
