This matters way beyond school. It explains why you can't remember what your boss just said when you're worried about being fired, or why learning a new skill feels impossible when you're anxious about failing at it. The tricky part is that anxiety often masquerades as seriousness. We tell ourselves that worrying harder will help us learn faster or understand better, but it's the opposite. The tension actually blocks the very mental flexibility you need to make connections and retain information. A student cramming in panic the night before a test, a worker fumbling through a presentation while their heart races—they're fighting against their own biology. This suggests something counterintuitive about growth: sometimes the most productive thing you can do is calm down first. Creating even small pockets of safety—taking a breath, stepping away briefly, or starting when you're rested instead of frazzled—actually makes learning possible. Anxiety and growth aren't partners. One shuts down what the other requires.
