All my life I believed I became an athlete through my own determination, but it's impossible to think that being descended from slaves hasn't left an imprint through the generations.

Your Starting Line Isn't Invisible

We love stories about self-made excellence. Work harder, want it more, and you'll get there. It's a comforting narrative because it puts us entirely in control. But Michael Johnson's reflection disrupts that neat story—not to take credit away from his extraordinary effort, but to acknowledge something we usually ignore: your starting line matters, even when you can't see it.

This isn't about diminishing individual achievement. Johnson was undeniably one of the greatest sprinters ever. It's about recognizing that excellence doesn't emerge from a vacuum. The physical traits, the cultural values around discipline and competition, even the economic desperation that sometimes fuels ambition—these things get woven through families and communities across generations. When you're descended from people who survived conditions that demanded incredible physical and mental resilience, something of that gets passed down, whether through genes or stories or the expectations set in your home.

The surprising part is that acknowledging this inheritance doesn't weaken achievement—it deepens it. It means your success isn't just your willpower against the world; it's also the accumulated strength of everyone who came before you. That's not less impressive. It's actually more complex and more true.
