In the end, the American dream is not a sprint, or even a marathon, but a relay. Our families don't always cross the finish line in the span of one generation. But each generation passes on to the next the fruits of their labor.

Success is what you pass on

Most of us grow up hearing the American dream pitched as something you personally achieve—finish your education, get the job, buy the house, done. But Castro's framing flips that entirely. He's saying the real dream isn't about your individual finish line at all. It's about what you hand off to people who come after you.

This matters because it reframes what success actually looks like. You might not get to see your kid graduate debt-free, or own a home without financial strain, or work in a field that didn't exist when you were young. But if you've moved things even slightly forward—paid down debt, opened a door, learned something hard and passed it on—you've done the work. The relay runner doesn't need to win the whole race; they just need to pass the baton cleanly and a little further ahead than they received it.

The tricky part is accepting that incompleteness. We live in a culture obsessed with personal achievement and visible wins. But some of the most meaningful progress happens quietly across decades, through people who never got to see the payoff. That's not failure—that's how actual change happens.
