No one can guarantee success in war, but only deserve it. — Winston Churchill

No one can guarantee success in war, but only deserve it.

Author: Winston Churchill

Insight: We live in a culture obsessed with guarantees. We want formulas that work, strategies that don't fail, the cheat code that skips the hard part. But Churchill's point cuts through that fantasy: there's no system, no amount of planning, that can promise you'll win. What you can control is whether you've actually earned it. This matters way beyond actual warfare. Think about your career, your relationships, your health goals. We often want the assurance first—the promise that if we do X, we'll get Y. But that's not how real stakes work. You can prepare brilliantly, make smart choices, stay disciplined, and still lose. A company can do everything right and still fail. A marriage can involve two committed people and still end. The uncomfortable truth is that effort and merit don't come with a success guarantee. What they do is make you deserve the win if it comes. The flip side matters too: you also can't blame bad luck if you never put in the work. Deserving something means you've actually shown up, made real sacrifices, and positioned yourself to succeed. That's the only thing genuinely in your control. The outcome? That's partly chance. But the deserve part is all you.
