You're a library, not a blueprint

We tend to think of ourselves as fixed—a personality, a set of traits, maybe a job title or a relationship role. But the truth is messier and more interesting: you're basically the sum of everything you've encountered. That conversation with a stranger on the train, the novel you read at seventeen, your grandmother's story about leaving her village, the documentary that changed how you see politics—these aren't just things that happened to you. They literally built who you are. You're not a person with a collection of experiences; you're a collection that happens to be a person.

This matters now more than ever, when there's pressure to be "authentic" or "true to yourself." But if we're all libraries, then authenticity isn't about stripping away layers to find some pure core. It's about understanding that growth, change, and even contradiction are built into how we work. The person who contradicts themselves from year to year hasn't failed at being authentic—they've just checked out new books. The real insight is permission: you don't have to stay the same, and you're not incomplete for being shaped by everything you've read, watched, and lived through. That's not confusion or inconsistency. That's being alive.
