The comfort of fitting in costs nothing

We're wired to fit in. From school hallways to office slack channels, the path of least resistance is always crowded, and that's exactly why it feels so safe. Agreeing with everyone else costs almost nothing—no argument, no awkwardness, no risk of being wrong in public. But standing apart? That requires something we rarely talk about: the willingness to be uncomfortable, potentially for a long time.

The tricky part is that "standing alone" doesn't mean being contrarian for its own sake. It means having thought something through enough that you're willing to defend it even when no one's defending it with you. That might be a small thing—refusing to laugh at a joke that landed mean, or admitting you don't understand something when everyone's pretending they do. Or it might be bigger: pursuing work that matters to you instead of what looks impressive, or believing something that your friends don't yet.
