I'm looking for backing for an unauthorized auto-biography that I am writing. Hopefully, this will sell in such huge numbers that I will be able to sue myself for an extraordinary amount of money and finance the film version in which I will play everybody.

Freedom and loneliness, same coin

There's a particular kind of creative freedom that comes from not waiting for permission. Bowie's joke here cuts deeper than it seems—he's describing a world where an artist doesn't need gatekeepers, institutional approval, or the right connections to make something real. He'll publish it himself, fund his own film, and control every role. It's absurdist on the surface, but it's also capturing something genuinely prophetic about creative independence.

Today, we see this everywhere. People build audiences on their own terms through social media, self-publish books that become bestsellers, and fund projects through crowdfunding. The infrastructure of permission has crumbled. But Bowie's wit also hints at something trickier: the exhaustion of doing everything yourself, playing every part, being your own producer and financier and star. There's a loneliness baked into that vision too.

The real insight might be that total creative freedom and total creative responsibility are the same thing. You get to build exactly what you want, but you're also completely alone in the building. No studio notes, but also no collaborators to push back when you're wrong. Bowie understood that liberation and burden aren't opposites—they're the same coin flipped different ways.
