The safest way to get what you want is to deserve what you want. — Charlie Munger
The safest way to get what you want is to deserve what you want.
Author: Charlie Munger
Insight: There's something almost uncomfortably straightforward about this idea, which is probably why we spend so much energy avoiding it. We'd rather believe in luck, connections, or timing—and sure, those matter. But Munger's pointing at something harder: the gap between what we want and who we actually are right now. Want a promotion? Deserve it first through real skill and reliability. Want a partner who's thoughtful and ambitious? Work on becoming that person yourself. Want financial security? Learn about money, build discipline, make good decisions repeatedly. The "deserve" part isn't about moral superiority; it's about alignment. When you've genuinely developed what's needed, you stop having to scheme or manipulate or hope. Doors open more naturally because you're actually ready. The real insight is that this removes a ton of anxiety. You stop wasting energy on shortcuts that probably won't work anyway, and instead focus on something concrete: becoming the person who naturally attracts what they want. It's slower than we'd like, sure. But it's the one path that actually works.
