He is best known for his works exploring the complexities of human nature and the interplay between art and life, particularly in his notable trilogies "The Deptford Trilogy" and "The Cornish Trilogy." In addition to his literary achievements, Davies was a prominent figure in Canadian cultural life, serving as the founding master of Massey College at the University of Toronto until his death in 1995.
