Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) was an African American mathematician, astronomer, and surveyor known for his contributions to the early development of the United States. He gained recognition for his accurate almanacs and for surveying the boundaries of Washington, D.C. Banneker was also an advocate for racial equality and is remembered for his correspondence with Thomas Jefferson on issues of civil rights.
