Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was an American writer, abolitionist, and military officer known for his advocacy of anti-slavery and women's rights. He played a significant role in the Civil War as a commander of the first African American regiment in the United States, the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. Higginson also contributed to literature and history through his writings, including essays, poetry, and his memoirs.
