Or you can chase work that matters, that changes something, that you'd do even if the paycheck was smaller. The thing is, both are legitimate. The trap is doing neither—drifting through a job that pays decently while convincing yourself you're still making a dent. That's how decades pass. What makes this quote stick is that it acknowledges a real cost. Building something that lasts, that people remember, usually means taking the riskier path at some point. It means saying no to the safer option. And that's genuinely hard when bills are real. But the opposite cost—waking up at fifty-five with a solid 401k and no record of mattering—is quieter and somehow more crushing.
