Most of us chase success as if it's a fixed destination—the promotion, the income level, the house. But this definition flips the script entirely. It suggests success isn't about reaching some external benchmark; it's about having the freedom to design your own day-to-day life. That sounds obvious until you realize how many successful people feel trapped: the well-paid job they resent, the obligations they can't escape, the constant pressure to maintain an image.

The sneaky part is that this kind of freedom doesn't just happen. You have to build it intentionally, often by making smaller sacrifices now to avoid larger ones later. Someone working toward this success might turn down higher pay for flexibility, or invest years building something they control rather than climbing someone else's ladder. It requires thinking about success differently than the culture teaches—less about the trophy, more about your actual daily reality.

The real test isn't whether you have success by conventional measures. It's whether you can wake up and do what matters to you, with the people you choose, without checking your phone for permission first.
