Love spreads where indifference takes root

We hear this one a lot, usually in the gentle voice of someone reminding us to "be nice." But there's something harder buried in it that we tend to skip past. Spreading love isn't about grand gestures or being endlessly cheerful. It's about showing up with actual attention—noticing the tired checkout clerk and treating them like they matter, or letting someone merge in traffic without honking. These tiny acts cost almost nothing, but they're the opposite of the default mode most of us operate in: distracted, defensive, assuming everyone else is fine without our kindness.

The real challenge here is that love in small moments feels worthless compared to the big problems. You help one person and poverty still exists. You're kind to a stranger and the world doesn't change overnight. But what Mother Teresa seemed to understand is that indifference spreads just as easily as love does. When we stay numb or cynical, we make it easier for everyone around us to do the same.
