Presence beats a paycheck

We live in an age where it's easier than ever to donate—a few clicks, a monthly subscription to a cause, and we feel like we've done our part. But Mother Teresa points at something we already know but often sidestep: that money can feel like a way to buy ourselves out of real involvement. It's efficient, sure, but it can also be a substitute for the harder work of actually showing up.

The tricky part is that she's not saying money doesn't matter. She's saying it's incomplete on its own. When you give only money to a person or cause, you're solving a problem from a distance. But when you give your attention, your time, your genuine concern—when you let yourself care enough to be inconvenienced—something shifts. You see the person, not just the problem. They feel seen.

This hits differently now because we're all stretched thin. It's tempting to think financial generosity lets us off the hook. But consider the people in your own life who've actually moved you: they usually did it by paying attention, not by spending. The insight isn't that we should feel guilty about giving money. It's that real support—the kind that actually changes things—usually requires us to be present in some way. That's the part money can't buy.
