When promises meet reality

There's a playful jab in this line, but also something serious worth sitting with. Mae West wasn't saying women don't think or analyze—she was pointing at a real dynamic: women often find themselves in the position of evaluating whether the men around them actually live up to their own stated values. Does he mean what he says? Will he show up? Can he handle being challenged?

This shows up everywhere, not just in romance. In workplaces, women frequently become the ones who notice when leadership talks about inclusivity but doesn't practice it, or when someone champions innovation while resisting change. It's exhausting, partly because it shouldn't fall to one group to be the reality-checker for everyone else's integrity. But it also reflects something true: ideas are easy to defend in theory, but they get tested in how we actually treat people.

The flip side is less visible but just as important. When women test men through their actions and choices, they're also testing themselves—deciding what they'll accept, what they'll overlook, what matters enough to push back on. That's not passive observation. That's a kind of power, though it comes wrapped in unfair expectations.
