They can't see a leap sideways into something completely different. When Ford asked people about transportation, their brains naturally defaulted to the existing framework—horses were the problem, so faster horses seemed like the obvious solution. They couldn't conjure the car because they'd never experienced one. This matters now more than ever, because we're drowning in surveys and focus groups and customer feedback. We treat what people tell us they want as gospel. But the most useful feedback often comes from watching what frustrates people, what they work around, or what they daydream about—not from asking them directly. The person struggling with traffic isn't wishing for a better commute in the way you'd expect; they're actually craving something that doesn't exist yet: freedom, time back, a different kind of life. The tricky part is knowing when to listen and when to ignore what people say they want. Both extremes fail. But if you're building something new, the people asking for faster horses might be pointing you toward the real problem—even if they can't see the solution themselves.
