This matters because it protects us from a comfortable trap. We can feel genuinely moved by someone's situation while doing absolutely nothing, and still call ourselves caring people. We scroll past the struggling person on our street. We tell ourselves we'd help if we had more time, money, or energy. But compassion without follow-through is just sentiment—it makes us feel better about ourselves while leaving the other person exactly where they started.
