The shield part is what makes this click into place. Perfectionism isn't actually about excellence; it's about control and protection. If everything you do is flawless, nobody can criticize you. You can't fail. You can't be ordinary or messy or human. That sounds safe until you realize the cost: you stop trying new things, you ruminate over tiny mistakes, you burn out because the bar is literally impossible to clear. Real striving—the healthy kind—has room for failure built into it. You set ambitious goals but you're okay with the draft, the rough version, the learning curve. You're not performing your own worthiness constantly. The distinction matters because one path leads somewhere; the other just loops, always apologizing for not being enough.
