John Lewis was an American civil rights leader and politician, best known for his role in the American civil rights movement, particularly as a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and as a key figure in the Selma to Montgomery marches. He served as a U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020, where he was recognized for his advocacy on social justice issues and commitment to nonviolent protest. Lewis was awarded numerous honors for his lifelong dedication to fighting for equality and human rights.
